he Guadalupe Agricultural and Livestock Fair Association is comprised of a group of volunteers dedicated to the promotion of agricultural, horticultural and livestock activities. These activities were founded on the farms and homesteads of the past and we will continue to emphasize their importance in today's society.
As president of this great organization, I would like to take a few moments of your time to thank the local Seguin and Guadalupe Co. communities for their continuing support of The Guadalupe County Fair and our Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Rodeo. This year we will be celebrating our 125th Annual County Fair. Additionally, for the third year in a row, the Guadalupe County Fair and Rodeo has been named the Best City or County Event by the readers of the Seguin Gazette Enterprise.
As most have already heard, the Seguin Events Complex is in the process of getting a face lift. The red iron in the rodeo arena has been painted, the rodeo arena has a new roof, the old wooden bleachers have been removed and new state of the art aluminum bleachers are being installed. We are also expecting new sound and lighting systems to be installed before our annual Fair and Rodeo. Consequently, some of the things you see during the rodeo will be different this year. Please stand by for changes as we adjust to the renovations.
We are pleased to welcome back the four years running winner of the PRCA Stock Contractor of the Year Award, Stace Smith Pro Rodeo Company. Stace Smith Pro Rodeo consistently provides us with outstanding stock for our spectator’s enjoyment. Look for their stock trucks around town as we get closer to the fair.
Our rodeo specialty act this year is The Wild Child. This act promises to be an exciting and fun filled motorcycle performance. Troy Lerwill, The Wild Child, has been the PRCA Comedy Act five times and the National Finals Rodeo Barrel man twice. During the 2007 National Finals Rodeo, Troy won the PRCA Comedy Act award and was selected as the “Coors Man in the Can”. Your support continues to help us provide the best of the best to our community.
Expect to see another superb carnival produced by Pride of Texas Shows. They have been a loyal supporter of our fair for many years and we continue to have a great relationship with their organization.
For the entire 125 year history of our fair, the home arts and field crops committees have been displaying the talents of our local community. This year we will have displays ranging from antiques to clothing to jams and preserves and many others. Our field crops committee will have displays of hay, corn, garden produce, home products and various other items.
Back by popular demand this year is our Barnyard Exhibit. For over 20 years, this attraction has been a big hit with the little ones. As we get closer to the fair make sure your child’s school gets a time to come down to the grounds for a tour.
We are holding our fifth annual BBQ Cook-off the weekend before the fair. This event becomes more popular every year. That same weekend we will have our annual Fair Parade on Saturday afternoon October 4th. We moved it up this year due to scheduling conflicts the weekend of the fair.
In conjunction with the BBQ cook-off, we are hosting our first ever professional ranch rodeo produced by Triple R Rodeo Company of Pearsall, TX. This event has become extremely popular lately. Triple R Rodeo hosted their ranch rodeo finals the last Sunday of the San Antonio Livestock Exhibition in front of a packed house. Our ranch rodeo will be held Friday evening October 3rd, 2008. Ranches such as The King Ranch often provide teams for ranch rodeos and compete in exciting events that include: steer tying, calf branding, wild cow milking, steer loading, cow hide races and wild horse saddling. Intense team competition coupled with well-fed, ornery livestock will make a great night of family entertainment. We will also have a calf scramble that evening for the kids.
Thanks again for supporting this great event. We could not continue to do this without the help and support of our community. Come on Sunday October 12th for free admission to the grounds. Hope to see you at the fair.
