he Guadalupe Agricultural Livestock & Fair Association Drill Team, established in January 2002, was organized as ambassadors of the Guadalupe Agricultural Livestock & Fair Association (GALFA).

Janice Woods Windle has allowed these ladies to use the title of her book “True Women” as part of their name, as they strive to honor the pioneer spirit of the women who helped settle Seguin, Gonzales, San Marcos and surrounding areas.

The second year drill team sponsor is Kirby’s Korner Restaurant in Seguin. Kirby’s has the best burgers in Texas, seriously! Our newest sponsors are Marion Animal Hospital-Dr. Bubba Kunde, and Parkview Veterinary Center-Dr. Scott Bugai. We are very proud of our sponsors and thankful for everything they do for us.

These ladies volunteer their time and horses to help promote the Guadalupe County Fair and Rodeo. They practice weekly to perfect their routines. The drill team members strive to entertain the crowd and have a great time doing it. Combining precision and skill, they perform such maneuvers as the Texas Entry, Double Wedding Ring, the Heart of Texas, Grand Sweep, Figure 8, Echelons, Pinwheel, Inverted Pinwheel, Lace the Boot and the Salute to the Crowd. The drill team members strive to entertain the crowd, and they have a great time doing it.

Their love of horses and riding is evident, having performed at the Lester Meier Rodeos, PRCA Rodeos and the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. Adding to that impressive list are the WPRA All Women’s Rodeos for U Go Girl Rodeo Productions. They have also performed at open horse shows for the Alamo Area Youth Horse Association, Alamo Dressage Association, and Randolph Air Force Base. They have won numerous awards in many area parades. As if that’s not enough, the True Women Drill team participated in an independent film in the Austin & Lockhart area. Team members support breast cancer awareness through the national “Tough Enough To Wear Pink” campaign.

The drill team members are professional women coming from a wide variety of backgrounds, such as careers in bus driving, computer technology, education, horse training, insurance, physical therapy, stay-at-home mom, speech therapy, student and others. These ladies stay very busy with their careers, family, volunteer work and the drill team. Each drill team member is a member of the Guadalupe County Fair Association and volunteers a minimum of twenty hours per year working at the Fairgrounds during major events, as well as keeping the grounds maintained for such events. Their personal rewards come from the joy of entertaining the crowd while promoting the Guadalupe County Fair & PRCA Rodeo.

Each member provides her own horse, equipment and uniform, as well as incurring all travel expenses. If you would like the Guadalupe County Fair Association True Women Drill Team to perform for your event or are interested in joining the team, please see one of the drill team members or call the Guadalupe County Fair Association office. Any monetary donations received by the team go toward a scholarship fund for a graduating senior girl entering an equine related field in college.
